  1. Took a chance on this little $9 gadget after reading mixed reviews. I’m running Linux and the Easycap makes no claims to support Linux. That’s a shame as it works extremely well!

I got a driver from here:

    [...]

I’m now transferring old VHS tapes to the computer with no issues. Picture and sound quality is surprisingly good. Definitely much better than I expected.

For reference I found these options to work well for encoding:

    mencoder [...]

This de-interlaces the video and saves it in a raw video format. I tried transcoding to x264 in real time but had some dropped frames. Instead I save in raw format and then transcode over to x264 with:

    mencoder test.raw -oac mp3lame -lameopts abr:br=128 -ovc x264 -x264encopts bitrate=500 -audio-delay 1.5 -o test.avi

I needed the audio delay to make audio sync properly. The resulting file is 2.8 MB/minute.

  2. Larry Atnip says:

It works, but induces a background noise on any video/audio captured. The sourceof the noise is the device, not the camera, VCR or computer.

  3. I purchased this item a few months ago because I finally wanted a video capture device to transfer our old home movies to disc, so that we’d have them for much longer than VHS can ever last. Surprise, it didn’t work. It wasn’t compatible. I decided since it was cheap to buy I’d keep it and wait until I upgraded my computer. I just bought a new laptop setup for multimedia applications and running Windows 7 64bit Home Premium edition. Guess what, the device still doesn’t work. It turns out that this particular device is only able to run on XP, Vista, and prossibly Windows 7 32bit edition. It’s too bad that when I purchased it, the tech specs didn’t say anything about that. Just plug-and-play! Well, that’s bull. I searched around the internet for days looking for updated drivers. All that I found were spoof links that downloaded malware, or nothing at all. Unless you have a computer running the specific operating system, don’t get this device. I can’t even locate a manufacturer, so I can’t contact them on getting a driver. Microsoft doesn’t have any drivers, and no one will offer support on this device. It’s an old model, and they want it gone. So, take my advice, let it collect dust on the maker’s shelf, not yours.
